Harvey & Lewis Opticians Acquires Karol Opticians of Wethersfield

Harvey & Lewis Opticians, a leading optical business and eyewear provider in Connecticut, has just completed an acquisition of Karol Opticians in Wethersfield. Harvey & Lewis will be merging the business with their newly-renovated Glastonbury location in Somerset Square. Well-known optician Roger Troie and the staff of Karol Opticians will be joining the Harvey & Lewis family.

“We’re very excited to be welcoming Roger Troie and the Karol Opticians team to our Glastonbury location,” said James Lewis, President of Harvey & Lewis. The Glastonbury Harvey & Lewis store is less than three miles away from the former Karol Opticians location just over the Putnam bridge, so patients will not need to worry about traveling any further for their eye care needs.

Along with gaining access to the Harvey & Lewis network of care providers and product lines, the change will allow Troie to focus more on patient care and remove the day-to-day administrative duties of running a small business.

“I’m really looking forward to being a part of the Harvey & Lewis family,” said Troie. “Our patients will have a newly-renovated store to shop in, with a larger selection of eyewear and will have access to optometric services. Harvey & Lewis also accepts vision and health insurance benefits, none of which we were able to do in the past.“

Troie joined Karol Opticians in downtown Hartford after completing his apprenticeship program for Opticianry, and then purchased the business in 1982. The business was relocated to Wethersfield in 1991, and will now become part of Harvey & Lewis’ Glastonbury location.

Gargoyles Unveiled at Harvey & Lewis

4,000 Pounds of Hartford’s Architectural History Return To Harvey & Lewis Opticians in Hartford.

Four statuesque stone gargoyles once perched atop the old Harvey & Lewis Opticians' building in Downtown Hartford during the mid 1980's will make their return to their original dwelling next week. The return of the gargoyles is a result of a partnership with the Connecticut Historical Society (CHS), who acquired the gargoyles in 2006 from a donation by Harvey & Lewis. An unveiling is scheduled to take place in front of the current Harvey & Lewis Hartford location at 45 Asylum Street on Thursday, October 30, 2014 at 12 PM.

The four historic icons display various elements of the optician's trade; one portrays someone holding a pair of binoculars, another holds a pair of repaired glasses, one holds a broken pair of glasses, and the fourth one grasps a box camera.

Simsbury's Daniel Peluso's, 17, Eagle Scout proposal to travel to Haiti and provide people there with eyeglass screenings was rejected but he decided to take the project on anyway. For six days in June, Peluso will travel to Haiti with a seven-person team to provide free eye care screenings to Haiti.

Yazzie, Harvey & Lewis's Fidelco Guide Dog In Training, is now 4 months old. She’s gaining about 3-4 pounds a week (!) and experiencing more and more of the big world around her every day. All the lessons she is learning and all the skills she is mastering will one day serve her well as she becomes the eyes of a Fidelco client who is blind or visually impaired.

Every Saturday, our family heads out to Fidelco's headquarters in Bloomfield for an hour-long puppy training class for Yazzie and her siblings. It is both fascinating and inspiring to witness firsthand just how many volunteers it takes to make this operation run: When we arrive on campus, we're made to feel welcome by a greeter, and we are then approached by another volunteer who asks whether Yazzie needs any food. Then, yet another friendly friend of Fidelco brushes Yazzie before we head in to the training center, where we are greeted by trainers and volunteer class assistants. Did I mention there's another class taking place right next door to ours? That's right! Two puppy classes take place every hour between 9 and noon every Saturday. Talk about cute!

Some of the Volunteer Puppy Raisers who are raising Yazzie’s siblings have raised puppies for Fidelco before. In fact, one of the families in our litter is raising its sixth Fidelco puppy! But, most of the families are new to the program, like us. And I think I can speak for them when I say this is among the best decisions we've ever made!

In the spirit of Thanksgiving, we at Harvey & Lewis would like to thank all the countless, passionate volunteers who, along with Fidelco's committed donors, work alongside Fidelco's dedicated (and tireless) staff members day after day to fulfill Fidelco's mission of providing increased independence to men and women who are blind or visually impaired by partnering them with an incredible Fidelco Guide Dog!

Happy 6 Month Birthday Yazzie!

Yazzie, the Harvey & Lewis Fidelco Guide Dog turned six months old on January 21st! She now weighs a whopping 60 pounds and is still growing steadily. At this age, the folks at Fidelco like their dogs to come in for an overnight stay to evaluate them and get an idea of how the training is coming and what we need to work on. Yazzie spent three nights at the Fidelco kennel (or “The Doggie Spa” as the staff calls it) and we are happy to report that Yazzie passed her six month evaluation with flying colors!

Summertime means vacation time and while we’ve committed ourselves to raising Yazzie, the Harvey & Lewis Fidelco Guide Dog, we still need to get a break from time to time. Now that we’ve developed a strong bond with Yazzie and she has become a part of our “pack”, we’ve been able to let her spend several extended visits to the kennel at Fidelco including during our summer vacation. She’s always very happy to be going to the Fidelco facility on the grounds of Kaman Aerospace in Bloomfield and the feedback we get from the staff is that, while very high energy, Yazzie is also eager to please when working with her handlers.

Now that we’re back we’re working very hard on her socialization skills with other dogs. We’ve been trying to take her to places where there tend to be a lot of dogs such as the West Hartford Reservoir, the bike trail in Simsbury and elsewhere. The goal in these walking exercises is for her to be able to observe the other dog as they pass by but not to interact. We do this with a tight leash, a steady pace and timely offering of treats to distract her. Yazzie has come a long way in being able to overcome her natural desire to interact with other dogs.

We also want her to be able to spend time in the company of other dogs on a social basis and so we have gotten together several times with Jim and Kitty Van Guten and their dog, Bodo. The Van Gutens have raised 16 guide dogs for Fidelco and are a real inspiration to newbies to the Fidelco Puppy Raiser program like us. It’s great to be able to observe experts handling their dog and we’ve picked up little tips that we’ve been able to apply to our training regimen. As Jim Van Guten said, “The day your dog is perfectly trained is the day before you give her back to Fidelco.” Yazzie and Bodo interact very well together on our walks and we have plans to do more walking in the future.

So where did our German Shepard-raising family go on vacation? Why Germany of course!

Graduation Day!

We recently got the call from Fidelco that it was time for Yazzie to begin her formal training to be a guide dog! We got about 4 weeks notice and were able to pick a time that was good for us to bring her in for the last time. The staff did a great job preparing for the day including a final class with Yazzie’s “Y” littermates. We’ve really enjoyed getting to know our group of eight families and have made many friends. Several families have already received new puppies before the old ones had graduated!

As hard as it was to say goodbye, we try to keep in mind that Yazzie’s mission in life is so much more than being a pet to us. The impact on someone’s life – as we learned from meeting Kristin and her dog Eva – is immeasurable.

Yazzie will now go through a six month training program where she will have to pass 10 levels of training. Assuming she succeeds, we will get an opportunity to see her do her final walk with a blindfolded trainer before being assigned to a client.

Looking back our role was to teach Yazzie to bond with one person, develop good habits and to expose her to as many different situations as possible so she won’t be fazed by whatever the world throws at her.

Looking back we would highly recommend this fun and rewarding experience for people with a passion for animals and for helping out this wonderful organization.
